This week’s WordPress Photo Challenge of Reflecting put me in mind of a charming Alaskan cruise the folks and I took in 2010! As we were making our way back to Vancouver after a week of stunning views of wilderness, waterways and wildlife, a clear day afforded these blurred reflections of the coastlines we were gliding past:
It was also on this cruise that I took one of my favorite pictures of Dad. I was hanging out beside him in our cabin when I caught his reflection in one of those magnifying vanity mirrors on the opposite wall:
As a little kid, I remember being puzzled by these kinds of mirrors in hotels. I mean, beyond going for a high-powered view up my nose for the heck of it, I couldn’t divine any practical use for them. But as age has begun robbing me of my ability to focus on close-up things, suddenly I totally get them! And I use them when I need make-up applying precision to try and keep a smokey eye from looking like an eye somebody punched me in…
Isn’t that a strange thing?
As I look back at some life experiences that were confusing and blurry to me at the time, it’s only upon current reflection – just at a time when I can’t order a meal without reading glasses – that I find myself thinking:
“Ahhh. Now, I see!”

The photo of your Dad is marvellous. I especially like the “bokeh” – the out of focus surrounding the focus. My bet would be you took that with a real camera and not a phone.
Thank you! And you’re right – that photo was taken with a proper camera. Wish I’d had a huge lens for that cruise but we live and learn.
Things out of focus often look more mysterious than reality. It allows the mind to wonder and fill in details to one’s heart content. I really like the photo of your dad.

Congratulations to you both! Have to admit we weren’t big into fine dining and whatnot but we went with Holland America and we’re quite happy – and we did always enjoyed an exterior room with a view and a little deck! Best wishes to you!
